Writing Tips- How I overcome writers block!

Writers block is the worst and it's something that plagues even the most experienced writers. When you are constantly writing it's hard to generate ideas and even harder not to burn out. So here are the tips on how I try to overcome writers block.

  1. I give myself a break. If I feel tired or I don't feel like writing I try to respect my body's discomfort. Now I know you should push yourself to write and don't get me wrong you can't ALWAYS give in to your fatigue however breaks are important. Your body is giving you signs. It's telling you it needs a break. So listen. Your work will be there tomorrow. So go watch TV, read a book, whatever you need to give your brain a break. Writing is a mental workout, and your brain is firing all day. You have rest days for physical workouts, do a mental rest day for your brain.

  2. Mood boards. If I am uninspired and WANT to write but can't think of anything I do mood boards for my characters. I try to decide what their favorite food would be, their favorite color, really get into the inner workings of their brain. All that unimportant stuff helps you flesh out your characters and sometimes it leads to them writing themselves. BTW Pinterest is a god sent for this!

  3. I listen to music and take a walk. I let my brain just wander. Let it explore scenarios without me telling it to stop or stay on topic. If I'm writing a fantasy book but I imagine a scene where my characters are getting hot dogs I let it play out. Music is a great inspiration and by letting your ideas play out freely, you allow yourself to let you guard down. Release the expectations and sometimes that can lead to solutions or new ideas. Best of all those scenes can be tweaked to fit your story anyway.

  4. I write a piece that isn't my WIP. I allow myself to feel inspiration even if its not for my WIP. Letting out those ideas keeps them from bottling up. It allows you to get it out so you can focus back on your WIP. But also you may find this new piece is something you are more passionate about.

  5. I reread my work. I don't like to do this often because I don't want to fall into the trap of editing my work and never making progress. But sometimes rereading your work, reminds you where you were going with your piece. And when you aren't focused on coming up with new ideas and are just expanding old ones you find yourself coming up with plots you would never have thought of.

Remember, writers block is normal and there is no one cure or right way to deal with it. Above all, the duration of your writers block doesn't mean you are any better or any worse as a

writer. Overall a piece that inspires you is a good piece. One that makes you excited write is all you need. And if you find yourself feeling like your piece is chore maybe it just needs some tweaking! Best of luck loves!
